Orientation & Insurance

Orientation

Before you can register for classes at UTA, you must attend one of the mandatory orientations for international students. Your acceptance packet will also include information about the orientation. You might want to choose which orientation attend based on when you can move-in to your housing.

Orientation topics include: cultural adjustment, immigration regulations, employment, campus resources, academic regulations, class registration, health services and health insurance.

UTA Student Health Insurance

It is mandatory for all Exchange students to be covered by health insurance for the entirety of your study at UTA. The UT Student Health Insurance Plan (UT SHIP) provides the needed coverage.  Enrollment in UT SHIP is automatic each semester and the insurance premium is automatically charged to your tuition and fee account when you register for classes.  As an Exchange student, you only have to purchase the plan for the semester(s) that you will be attending UTA. Please note that you will not be able to register for class until you show proof of insurance.

Insurance Waiver

Effective Fall 2014, the UT System has established new criteria in which an international student can request a waiver to the student health insurance plan by providing alternate health insurance coverage. In order to be approved for a waiver, your alternate health coverage must meet or exceed the requirements as set in the System regulation and be PPACA compliant. Waivers that were approved by the Office of International Education during past semesters may no longer qualify to replace the UT SHIP, due to the new requirements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Students considering a waiver of the UT SHIP should review the guidelines before submitting a waiver.  Information about the criteria and procedures for an insurance waiver are available online here.
