International Internships
When deciding to participate in an international internship, there are a few things you should first consider:- Are you interested in a full-time or part-time internship? Part-time internships are usually available as a component of a study abroad program, meaning you would take coursework full or part-time and complete your internship for an additional 3-6 credits. Students who participate in a full-time internship usually do not complete any coursework at a university abroad.
- Do you require academic credit for your internship? Many internships offered through our reciprocal exchange programs and affiliated partners offer credit-bearing internships. Students who participate in these internships usually meet weekly as a class and complete reading and writing assignments in conjunction with their formal internship placement. Students who wish to participate in an internship that is not credit-bearing may be able to work with their academic department to enroll in an independent study course at UTA during their internship abroad to receive credit.
- Are you willing to take an unpaid internship? Like most internships in the US, most internships abroad are unpaid and should be viewed as an opportunity to gain knowledge in your field of study rather than a means to make money. Some internships, however, may provide a small stipend to help with living expenses while abroad. Work Abroad
Work Abroad programs are like working holidays - they provide you the opportunity to explore the world while putting some money in your pocket at the same time. Work Abroad programs are usually temporary, seasonal jobs over the summer break, while other positions may be available up to one year depending on the work visa restrictions of the country. When researching Work Abroad programs, consider these questions:- Does the program provide or help arrange housing in-country?
- How much support is provided in securing a job before arrival in the country? Does the provider have staff in-country to help locate relevant jobs? Are in-person interviews required for the positions?
- How much does a work visa cost for the country you are interested in working? Does the provider provide visa support as part of their price?
- What type of training is provided pre-departure and upon arrival in-country?
- Is travel insurance provided by the provider?
Working During Your Study Abroad Program
While it is not recommended that students work while studying abroad, many countries do allow US students to work part-time on student work visas during their study abroad program. Before making the decision to pursue a work visa during your study abroad program, it is important that you are well into your studies at your host institution and have a good grasp on the time needed to be successful in all of your courses. Once you have determined that you want to pursue part-time work, you should meet with your Study Abroad Advisor at your host institution to discuss the process of applying for a work visa.General Work Abroad Resources
